What is the problem the project is addressing?

In Rwanda teenage pregnancy and subsequent motherhood is a major challenge to a girl child who has no social support from family, friends and the community.

This project addresses underage pregnancy, HIV/AIDS, poverty, and illiteracy in the Gasabo Kigali, Rulindo in northern and Kirehe in the East of Rwanda. Watoto Vision on Africa offers teenage mums economic empowerment, self-esteem, education and life skills.

Quote from teenage mother in program: “My parents treated me badly at home and tore my books after I became pregnant while I was in school by my classmate. I came to Watoto vocational centre for basic skills training. Watoto Vision on Africa is helping me get my life back.”

How will this project solve the problem?

Watoto Vision on Africa empowers teenage mothers through basic skills training, Accelerated Learning, Peer Education, Tailoring, Batik, Printing, Tie and dye, Painting, Waste Management and transformation and Microfinance training. Our assessment has found that these community programmes have an immediate impact.

What is the potential long-term impact of this project?

After successful entrepreneurship and vocational training the teen mothers are able to set up small businesses including Tailoring, Batik, Printing, Tie and dye, Painting, bead-working, knitting and. Through the sale of these items, the ladies make a small amount of money that offers a livelihood to them and their children.

The project will also help economically empower teenage mothers and eradicate poverty in the communities.
